I’m from western NY, an area that has very little options for adaptive sports. I was very excited when I relocated to SC and learned of all the different things that are now available to me. I got involved in wheelchair basketball a few years ago and it has become something that I am very passionate about. It gives me something I do for me. Something I can look forward to every week. A social outing, a workout, camaraderie. I love to compete, always have. But once you become disabled, you feel as if that’s no longer an option. Coastal Adaptive Sports thinks otherwise! C.A.S sponsors a local wheelchair basketball team based in North Myrtle Beach named the Coastal Chairmen. We are D3 in the National Wheelchair basketball association. The season goes from Aug-March but we practice year round. I’m extremely happy that something like this is available in my community. Adaptive sports has saved me in many ways. It helps me live. I was introduced to Brock and Coastal Adaptive Sports by my boss at Tommy Hilfiger while researching volunteer opportunities in my community. What I was supposed to be doing was checking a box off on my to do list and what I ended up doing was becoming completely immersed in an inclusive, welcoming environment. When I first attended a Wheel to Surf event, I can't recall exactly what I was expecting, but when I left I knew all my expectations had not just been shattered but replaced with this calm, light, warm, joyful outlook. I tell people all the time they need to just go and see it for themselves- something about the energy buzzing, the smiles, the inclusiveness- being part of this community gives me and my son so much more than I have been able to give them. Brock will argue with you that it's a mutually beneficial relationship but I'm not buying it... I'm a better mom, leader, coworker and human because of my experience here. It's the least I can do to continue my pursuit of raising funds annually to assist the program in its growth.

And the best way to do that is together - as part of a team. But often, it can be hard to find activities that are accessible to everyone. And that can be discouraging, leaving you feeling disconnected.

But the truth is, everyone deserves the opportunity to play in the safety of a supportive community. CAS was started by adaptive athletes, volunteers, and donors for that very reason: to bring together people of all abilities to play.

Whether you’re looking to just try a new activity, have aspirations to compete on the international stage, or you want to play regularly with our fun-loving local tribe, there’s a spot for you!
