Coastal Adaptive Sports as a passion to bring sporting opportunities and recreational activities to people with disabilities in a way that is fun and lifegiving. Through our early existence, we have moved into multiple types of adaptive sports and activities. We currently have programs in these sports:
-
Basketball
Coastal Adaptive Sports offers both competitive play and also more laid back recreational play. For the serious competitors, we have a wheelchair basketball team called The Coastal Chairmen. They play in Division 3 of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and battle teams from places like Spartanburg, Columbia, Fayetteville, Raleigh, Charlotte, Winston, and Charleston. Here's more info on wheelchair basketball.
For people that don’t salivate at the idea of beating opponents, we have a recreational program with pick-up games for people of all ability levels. We have loaner chairs and an open door policy. We meet at the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic & Fitness Center on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 pm. For more schedule info, visit our basketball page.
-
Cycling
One of the types of adaptive sports that has gotten really popular is adaptive cycling. Whether it’s with a side-by-side trike, hand-cycles, or multi-wheeled cycles with chairs, we try to facilitate opportunities. We can get some exercise, take in some nature, challenge ourselves, and make friends doing it. We have adaptive cycles ready and waiting. Sign up for a bike ride!
-
Surfing
Coastal Adaptive Sports partners with Adaptive Surf Project to provide fun, life-changing events (Wheel to Surf) that allow athletes to do what many of them thought was impossible. With an impressive team of volunteers and community support, Wheel to Surf has become one of the most effective adaptive surfing clinics in the country. There are modified surfboards designed to accommodate anyone with the gusto to brave the waters (Don’t worry, it’s safe). Standing, seated, prone, and tandem positions are all used by our athletes on these boards. Sign up to participate here. Sign up to volunteer here.
Coastal Adaptive Sports hosts many social events throughout the year, and also hosts or partners to provide activities such as:
-
Wheelchair Games
As a qualifier for paralympics, we host a track and field event that’s a ton of fun for everyone involved.
-
Drum Circle
We have athletes that participate with the Myrtle Beach Drum Circle Group on the first Saturday after each full moon.
-
Kayaking
Of the thrilling types of adaptive sports kayaking has to be up there. We coordinate with Horry County Parks and Recreation and assist adaptive athletes to provide a safe, fun, and exciting day kayaking on the Waccamaw River.
We have benefitted from wonderful athletes, families, community members, and volunteers here at Coastal Adaptive Sports. We want you or someone you know to be one of them. Contact us if you are interested in volunteering. Sign up to participate here. And to you potential participants, just know that we have skilled and patient volunteers eager to help you do what you might not think you can do. Come give it a shot!
